We’re a fan of dark themes and color inversion here at PC Guide. Not only does it make user interfaces in some cases cooler to look at, but it also makes technology and digital content accessible for a wide range of users.
For those who regularly suffer from migraines and eye strain, switching to a dark mode theme or user interface will improve matters. Although we’d recommend going to the opticians for a more permanent resolution when learning how to change black background to white on Android devices
For those who have issues with their vision, the obvious move would be to make things look bigger, but that’s not always the case. Some people can see some colors better than others, which is where color inversion comes in for color blind and visually impaired users.
How to change black background to white on Android devices
For Android users, Google includes both a dark theme and color inversion features. Better yet, Android 10.00 and up support both features being used at once, offering more options for users.
Let’s go through how to turn both features on, the following steps have been carried out on a Google Pixel 6 running Android 12, but any Android 11 and up menu system should provide similar options:
Turn on Dark Theme
Dark theme will change the Android user interface to darker color spectrums. Well, mostly black and dark grey to be specific. To activate to go Settings > Accessibility and find the ‘Display’ subheading. The dark mode toggle should be under this sub-heading to turn off or on.
Turn on Color Inversion
Unlike dark themes simply changing the color of Androids user interface such as menus, color inversion affects everything. For example, a white page showing black text will show a black page with white text.
To activate go to Settings > Accessibility and find the ‘Display’ subheading. Next, go for ‘Text and Display’ or ‘Color Inversion’ depending on the Android version then toggle ‘Use Color Inversion’ on. Users can also activate a color inversion shortcut should they wish to only use it in certain scenarios.
Using Dark Theme and Color Inversion together
When learning how to change black background to white on Android devices, remember that not all apps support dark mode. It’s a good idea to have both dark theme and color inversion activated if needed, then users are getting the best accessibility coverage visually. However, only devices running Android 10 or later can use both features at once.
For Android 9 or earlier devices, only one mode can be used at once. If possible, it’s worth upgrading to the latest version of Android a smartphone can support for security, functionality, and optimization reasons.
